What is fascism?
Long live death! Down with intelligence!
So said General Millan Astray, first commander of the Spanish Foreign Legion, and a major figure in Franco’s regime in Spain.
With fascism the basis of society is inequality. Racism and sexism are to be dogmas. Law exists to enforce the will of the state, which has absolute power. Government authority comes from its status as a superior, self-appointed elite. Reason is abolished in favour of mindless obedience which Hitler called ‘sleepwalking’ and progress is neither possible nor desirable. Dissent is to be exterminated. Human life is a pawn in the hands of the state.
The Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio is a fascist.
